Rockin' With... Cupid Against Venus

Cupid Against Venus, an independent pop rock band hailing from Sydney, Australia. After forming in early 2009, they quickly garnered attention and stood out compared to most other bands around the local area. They’ve released their debut EP, appeared in TV Hits magazine and have created a growing fan base, I caught up with the four guys that make the band; Daniel, 19 (Vocals, Guitar) Adam, 21 (Bass, Vocals) Stephen, 20 (Guitar, Synth) and Tyler, 20 (Drums, Percussion, Vocals).

For someone who hasn't heard of you, how would you describe 'Cupid Against Venus'?
Cupid Against Venus are a bunch of kids doing what they love, which is writing, playing music and trying to reach as many people as possible with it. Although Daniel and Adam are brothers, both Tyler and Steve are considered family too.

How did the band get together?

The band got together whilst in high school. Lead singer, Daniel, wanted to start a band and write some music so he asked his old friend Tyler to be his drummer. Stephen later joined and a little after that they decided to introduce Adam on bass.

What's the story behind the name 'Cupid Against Venus'?
Adam thought of the band name which he actually got after writing lyrics one night. The title originates from a French film which he watched drunkenly one night at 4 in the morning after coming home from the city. The film was about casual sex and a man being in love with 2 seperate women. He titled the song Cupid Against Venus (future band name) because both are god/goddesses of love and it evokes that love is a fight.

You've released your debut EP, ‘The Autumn EP’, where can we purchase or download this?
We have not put it up on iTunes but it is all available, absolutely free, to download or listen to off YouTube or our band page on social networks.

How was the recording process especially being an independent band?
We absolutely loved it. It was the first time us 4 boys had been in a professional studio since starting the band. We learnt a great deal from being in there throughout the 8 or 9 days. We funded the EP ourselves which was a bit tough but we are happy that people are listening, telling us that they enjoy it and know our songs.

Could we be expecting a follow up EP or album soon?
Not sure about another EP but we did just record a new single in the studio 2 months ago. The title of the track is 'The Abyss' and it is currently getting mastered through studio 301. We are deciding on a date to release it.

Are you looking at creating a music video anytime soon?
We've only had one music video before which was for our first track 'Chortle'. That was created by our friend Ash who was applying to an art school. She filmed and produced the clip (which hit 5000 views), applied and got accepted into the course with it. Professional film clips are very, very expensive, but we are hoping to have one out over the next year.

If you could tour with any ‘Pop’ acts in the world, who would it be?
Daniel - Phantom Planet
Adam - Kings of Leon
Stephen - The Killers
Tyler – Prince

What does Cupid Against Venus have planned for 2012?
Playing a large amount of shows early on in the year to broaden our fan base. We are also trying to land a slot on a national tour. It’s down to us and two other bands for the slot so hopefully we get it. The tour will take us to Queensland, Melbourne, Canberra and Newcastle throughout June and July. We are hoping to hit 10,000 followers by this time next year. But the main plan is to keep having fun and do what we do :)

Where do you hope to see this band in 3 years?
Hopefully even more popular throughout Australia and also more so overseas in different countries as well. We are working on playing with slightly larger acts such as Short Stack, New Empire and For Our Hero which would give us quite a boost that would be needed to create a large amount of hype, which would get us over to the United States where we would love to go and tour :)

On & Off

A big Thank you to the guys from Cupid Against Venus for taking part! Wishing them all the best.
