Review by Tori Hyland
The debut album of Nevada’s newest alternative band, FALLING IN REVERSE has arrived. Five tattooed, pierced and dark looking guys make up the band. They might seem like your average hardcore band, but I assure you there’s a difference. The name, Ronnie Radke, might ring a bell; the ex-lead singer of ESCAPE THE FATE who has been in prison for the last few years. Well he’s back, here’s his band and with their debut music video The Drug in Me Is You already reaching 3+ million views on YouTube in just two months, they’re ready to get to the top.
Opening with Raised by the Wolves, one of the first songs people heard before the release of the album and my personal favourite. A really good catchy beginning song sets the feel of what FALLING IN REVERSE is and set out to be.
Moving to the third song, The Drug In Me Is You, the debut single. I found to have a similar feel to Situations by ESCAPE THE FATE, a song created while Radke was still apart of the band and probably ESCAPE THE FATE’s most popular song of all time, with 30+ million views on YouTube. Fast, catchy and ‘Ronnie’.
Listening through the middle, each song takes on a personality of its own, each with different sets of rhythm and beats, mixed with guitar solos. Songs like I’m Not A Vampire, Good Girls, Bad Guys and Pick Up The Phone demonstrate a lighter, pop punk sound of FALLING IN REVERSE.
The last half of the album shows the other side of FALLING IN REVERSE. A harder sound with breakdowns and unclean vocals. Until you get to the ninth song Caught Like A Fly, a really odd song but a stand out track. Using a waltz beat and a rant at the start seems to be added between for humour.
Running through the album, the diversity is immense and the whole album becomes difficult to pin point. Pop punk, post hard-core, hardcore, screamo, rock all seem influential throughout the album. Unlike most bands in a similar genre, they clearly change riffs, rhythms, breakdowns and beats while still keeping a catchy feel. It seems like it was a tonne of fun to make, with their cheeky lyrics and humorous song names.
Although most of the lyrics are humorous and make no sense at all on occasions, listening closely a lot of the lyrics are interpreted to be about Ronnie’s past with prison, drugs and moving on from it. ‘Running from my past, I’m praying feet don’t fail me now’ a line from the third song The Drug In Me Is You.
It’s a very good CD and somewhat crazy. A great new beginning for Ronnie and the rest of FALLING IN REVERSE. Now we just await all the contests of FALLING IN REVERSE vs. ESCAPE THE FATE, and I think FALLING IN REVERSE might already have one up on them.
