Melbourne’s own, Dream On Dreamer, are turning heads in the Australian and International metalcore scene, and with their latest album release, Heartbound, it will be sure to give them the final push the young sextet need to become true competitors in the game.

It’s difficult to believe that Dream On Dreamer has only been together since 2009, and have already toured nationally with artists such as The Amity Affliction, Confession, Closure In Moscow and Avenged Sevenfold. Some would say they came together on pure luck. Marcel happened to be a German Exchange student, while Aaron had just migrated from America; all the others had been playing in local bands and were after something fresh.

The album begins with 41 second instrumental, I, an introduction for the second song, Yourself as Someone Else, a song inspired by a blind man. Rough unclean vocals, Fast paced drumming, Catchy guitar riffs, pop punk sounding vocals, mixed with some synth beats and brutal breakdowns, is what defines this band. Passing over the next few songs, it’s obvious this album will create a very energetic show and a fast pace among audience in their live shows.

I found Marcel’s lyrics and his meaning of the songs quite interesting and different because of his German background. Especially noticeable in his interpretation of the third song and stand out song on the album, Downfall: ‘Having an ocean that separates me from my family and being on my own for the first time of my life over the past few years, hasn’t exactly been the easiest.’ Although I feel some of the deep meanings get lost, in his aggressive vocals.

From the sixth song, Taking Chances, Breaking Free, onwards the songs started to sound quite similar and lacked diversity, until you get to the last song, Lifestream, my personal favourite. It is a slower song, but picks up pace in the middle, with both Michael and Marcel’s vocals together.

All the songs have catchy hooks and good execution on their breakdowns. Marcel Gadacz (Unclean vocals), Callan Orr (Guitar), Luke Domic (Guitar), Michael McLeod(Bass/Vocals), Daniel Jungwirth (Keyboard/Synth)  and Aaron Fiocca (Drums) are on the right track.

After listening to this album, I would definitely listen to it again and am interested in seeing their live show to compliment, Heartbound.
