Rockin' With... DanSweeto

DanSweeto (previously known as ‘Dance. Sweet. Oh’) are an independent pop/rock band from Canberra, Australia. When DanSweeto came together was difficult to define; Jordan, 19, (vocals/guitar) and Brendan Maloney, 21, (drums) both had been making cover videos separately for quite a while. After playing various small shows and supporting New Empire in Canberra, they can only go further. They recently released their debut single Forever To Me (available on iTunes), I caught up with the boys.

For someone who has never heard of you, how would you describe ‘DanSweeto’?
Brendan: Our musical style is pop/rock mainly.
Jordan: A super sexy, Aussie, upcoming pop/rock awesome band ;) [laughs]

How did you get together?
B: Jordan contacted me through my YouTube page. I have done some video game music covers on my drums, recorded them and put them online. He asked me if I wanted to be part of the band and I told him that I was interested. He asked me to do a cover of one of their songs and I chose to cover Pointless. From there, I travelled down to Canberra and finally met up with Jordan and that's how I came to be a part of the band.
J: Like Brendan said, I contacted him through his YouTube. I discovered his Pokémon Theme Song cover and decided to watch more of his unique covers. I saw how intricate his drumming skills were (perfect for our style of music) and that he was living in Newcastle, so from there I emailed him with the proposal that he join DanSweeto. The rest is history! ;D

You recently released your debut single, Forever To Me, how have the fans responded?
B: The fan response has been really positive. I've shown the cover to most of my extended family and they were quite taken with the song as well. As with anything there will be people who don't like it. Some for no particular reason but others have given more constructive criticism and I find that is ultimately beneficial in anything one does.
J: Fans have responded great! We have had many people buy our single already this month and great positive feedback! If fans are liking Forever To Me I can't wait to see how they will react to even bigger potential songs in 2012!

Could we be expecting a full length album or EP anytime soon?
B: I'm hoping to get back into the studio soon and record some more original material and put out an EP or album hopefully before the mid-year.
J: At this stage fans can be expecting our new EP around June/July next year, if all goes according to plan :)

You have the music video for Forever To Me, coming out in January, do you have a release yet? What can fans expect?
J: We do :) No particular release date yet, we can say mid-January though. I think fans are going to be really excited with the overall outcome though! :)

Now I understand Jordan, you have many covers on YouTube, with the whole DanSweeto project taking off, could we expect more covers or will you be more focussed upon original songs?
J: For 2012 we will be focusing a lot more on our original music but I don't see why not every now and then Brendan and I might upload a cover for fun :)

You were lucky enough to score a support position for New Empire’s show in Canberra, what was that like?
B: New Empire were really laid back guys with this great positive energy. They were really nice toward us and I'd be glad to tour with them again.
J: Definitely the biggest show we've played to date, it was amazing, even us playing an acoustic set! New Empire were great guys, so encouraging. We got the privilege to talk to and hang out with For Our Hero at the show as well which was very humbling for me, especially when we were told that they actually watch our vids on YouTube and like us! Support like that just inspires you.

If you could tour with any band in the world, who would it be and why?
B: I'd have to say, because I'm a huge Sonic fan at heart that I'd love to tour with Crush 40. If not for them I don't think I'd have kept playing drums for as long as I have.
J: Hmmm, I would have loved to tour with the old Metro Station 3 years back. I've always wanted to tour with Short Stack too, if we got the chance to one day, my life would be complete [laughs] :P

What does DanSweeto have planned for 2012?
B: We have more shows and competitions planned. I'd really like to go across the country especially to Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.
J: 2012 is going to be our year. I really think that fans will be excited with what DanSweeto have got planned! Not giving too much away but there will be more music videos, tours, big shows and competitions in the cards! I'm even excited! :3

Where do you hope to see this band in 3 years?
B: I hope to see the band on a world stage. If we put the hard effort in, I believe it's an achievable ambition.
J: Music is our life and we are passionate and determined. Not to mention our fans are so freaking supportive. I can see DanSweeto (like Brendan said) on the World Stage with other big name artists in 3 years’ time. One thing I'll never try to outgrow is being humble and thankful for the people who support us :)
