In late 2009, five young teenagers came together to create one of the best Australian Pop power bands around, you might know them as The Never Ever. After chopping and changing around their band line up, sitting in early 2012; maybe they’ve finally got it right. Dylan, 19 (Vocals), Brad, 22 (Guitar), Pat, 20 (Bass/Vocals), Lani, 21 (Synth) and Jess, 20 (Drums) make up the upcoming Sydney band. They’ve already released their debut EP, Dancefloors & Dinosaurs, played numerous shows across Australia, have a clothing endorsement with Factorie, signed a deal with Habour Agency and are now gearing up to release their sophomore EP, Breathe. I thought it was about time I caught up with the colourful quintet.
How did the band get together?
Jess and I (Brad) played together in a previous band. That band was a bit heavier and after a year or so we both felt it was right to move onto a new project. We got together with some of our friends and started playing pop and it just went from there.
Both Colby McQueen (ex-vocalist) and Aaron Delgado (ex-bassist), original members of the band, have left within time and moved onto other musical projects. Do you still keep in contact with them?
I think the Sydney music scene is a very tight knit group as it is, so when those members left, it wasn't really goodbye as we still see each other around quite a lot. The Never Ever 100% support both ex-member's new projects and wish them all the best for any other musical endeavours they may pursue.
What can fans expect "Breathe" to sound like? What were your influences for the EP?
We've all matured a lot since the old EP, we started finding out feet as song writers and I think that definitely shows through in the new songs. It’s a slightly different sound, but it’s still TNE. We still listen to all the same stuff we used to, so I think the biggest influence was just a desire to write better songs this time around.
How has the writing and recording process been?
It's been very different to the writing and recording process of the last EP, Dancefloors and Dinosaurs. Dylan has definitely added his own style to the music and we as musicians and as people have grown up a lot and started to write music that's a little more complex and a little deeper lyrically.
What does The Never Ever have planned for the rest of 2012?
Heaps of top secret stuff... which may or may not include new music, new videos and a lot of touring.
Where do you hope to see this band in 3 years?
Hopefully we'll be sharing the stage with all the bands we love, and getting to see some of the world we haven't already been to.
