There’s very few occasions you come along an amazing independent Australian band whose debut single sits on replay for days, but luckily this happens to be one of those occasions. Canberra’s own indie pop five piece, Love & Satellites, only formed in October 2011 and have already developed their distinctive catchy sound. Jay (Vocals), Chase (Bass/Vocals), Mike (Guitar), Aaron (Guitar) and Kidd (Drums) make up the band. Myself being very eager to see what’s next for them, I caught up with them.
For someone who has never heard of you, how would you describe ‘Love & Satellites’?
Sound wise, we put a strong focus on trying to write intelligent, catchy tunes and experiment with different guitar effects to give it an epic feel. Then when it comes to playing our songs live, it's all about trying to make it an energetic show so people can have fun. We try to feel what we play and get a genuine buzz out of delivering a positive experience to someone who needs it.
Is there a story behind the name, ‘Love & Satellites’?
The name came about as a concept we wanted to associate with our music. It's a simple mindset that hopefully some people can connect with. No matter what experiences have led a person to this very point in time, there are always ups and downs. Life's never easy for all of us at the best of times, but if we remember to focus on what we love, whether it's people, art, a cherished experience, your favourite hobby etc. Your perspective can change for the better along with your outlook. There's an old saying, 'If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change'.
What are some of the band’s musical influences, and musical acts you personally enjoy listening to?
At the moment we're right into Angels & Airwaves, Tom Delonge is a genius. We're open to all types of music though; there are elements in every genre that reach out to different people.
What’s one tour or festival in the world, you’d love to be included on?
We're thankful to have the opportunity to be able to perform our music. A dream come true would be a national tour in our home country raising money for some of the causes we support, like cancer research, anti-bullying and polio eradication in the world.
Your debut single, Girl I Used To Know (Available on iTunes & their Facebook page), which I must mention is a really impressive song for such a young band, what’s the story behind the song?
We've got a bunch of songs that we're really excited to show people, we picked 'Girl I Used To Know' to kick things off and use as our first release to introduce people to our sound. It's about losing your first love and how it feels in our own words.
If a fan was tossing up between purchasing your song or Justin Bieber’s new song, how would you convince them to choose yours?
Well, Justin Bieber is a talented dude and has the success behind him to back it up. We're just another band in a massive sea of bands, but we hope people out there can find something special about what we're about. It's a very inspiring feeling when someone listens to our music and supports it.
So in the recording department, are you guys currently working on a debut album or EP?
The boys are really looking forward to releasing new material that's been in the works, there's been a lot of effort into making sure we push the boundaries of our genre and write songs people can connect with. We're excited and nervous at the same time. There's a strong push to release our EP as soon as possible, get a cool indie music video and let people decide if they like it or not.
Have you got any upcoming tours fans should know about?
All shall be revealed very soon actually, we ask people to add us on Facebook or Twitter for special announcements.
