Rockin' With... Skyway

Skyway, a pop punk band from the Gold Coast, Australia. You may know from that band that toured with The Amity Affliction and Asking Alexandria on the ‘F*ck The Reaper’ tour? Or has that album with the boy and the globe on the front? Yeah, Sound familiar. I caught up with them to find out about all things Skyway.

For someone who has never heard of you, how would you describe ‘Skyway’?
A band who sounds like that other band which has that song your mum likes.

The word ‘Skyway’ means, 1. A recognised route followed by aircraft or 2. An elevated highway, what was your influence and story on being called Skyway?
I'm not actually sure, it's a mystery who even thought of the name... the reason I'm going to claim is that it's the brand of bikes in the box office hit 'BMX Bandits’.

You’ve spent a lot of time touring in your bio you claimed to rack up 90+ shows in 2010, what do you think is so appealing about your live show?
I think the fact that everyone who comes and watches us, leaves with a sense of self-worth and the thought of 'that was so bad I actually feel good about myself'.

You have also toured with an endless amount of large named bands including recently supporting The Amity Affliction and Asking Alexandria. From all the bands you have toured with, who was the best to tour with and why? Did you learn a lot from them? Did they show you a good time? Etc.
Such a hard question because we've done a wide range of shows/tours and they've all had their own special aspects that made them 'the best'. (Personally) I'm going to say the best band to tour with was Apart From This - because they were our friends long before we even toured so when we finally did it was a ball. That band and their crew are a breed of their own, it's awesome. Shoeless, weed-devouring, alcoholic, hessian, hobbit-like freak musicians who make sure there is never a dull moment.

What’s a band you would love to tour with if given the opportunity?
Descendents or NOFX, I think a few of the other guys might say New Found Glory and Millencolin but you get the picture...

You’ve also been lucky enough to tour throughout foreign countries including Japan. How does performing overseas compare to performing in Australia? How do the fans differ?
You definitely get treated a lot better (in Japan), the food tastes delicious, people are more friendly and everyone is dressed much sharper than you. We found every show had a much more positive atmosphere to it rather than playing at home. Funnily enough there was one fight in Osaka which was started by (surprise surprise) a pissed Australian! Nice one mate. The people going to shows are also there just for the bands so everyone makes the most of it, a majority of the payers don't drink! (Even though most of the venues were bars).

Finders Keepers, was your debut album released last year. Can you tell us a bit about the album?
It's blue and has a kid on the front with a globe behind his back, I've been told you can open the casing and inside is a CD. Once you have obtained the CD you can then play it on the appropriate compact disc player where you will experience 14 of the most mediocre tracks you have ever heard. There is also a lyric booklet for said mediocrities.

What are the current plans for your sophomore album?
We're hoping to get over to the US towards the end of the year and record, it's all early days at the moment. We still have a few songs hanging around that didn't make it onto 'Finders Keepers' so who knows - you might even get to hear them a little sooner rather than later.

2011 was a big year for Skyway, was there a particular highlight or favourite moment for you?
The 'Fuck The Reaper' tour as a whole made my year; huge, sold out shows and everyone involved (crew wise, etc.) was just an absolute legend - a pleasure to be a part of. Another notable mention would have to be the show with Parkway Drive for the 'Mix and Mash' tour at Riverstage in Brisbane. The Wonder Years were also playing that show so it was great seeing old friends/hanging out/playing a gigantic outdoor stage

2012 has just begun, what are your plans for the rest of the year?
Shows, shows and more shows, a new song video or two and then head to the US to record an album and if we finish all that up early... then buy a catamaran.

Where do you see yourselves in 3 years?
In the salt mines of Siberia after a Russian-tour-gone-bad.

Birthdays (Are For Sluts And Losers)

Big Thank you to Skyway, for answering some questions! Wishing them all the best for the future!
