Burning Brooklyn, a rock band from the Gold Coast, Australia. Never heard of them? Well aren’t you in for a treat! They were lucky to score a support position for Escape The Fate in Brisbane last year, and have played numerous local gigs, but the boys have recently ventured into the recording studio. In the midst of releasing new music, I decided to catch up with drummer Alistair Grist about new music, touring and well… Taking Back Sunday.
For someone who has never heard of you, how would you describe ‘Burning Brooklyn?
I would say we're a passionate rock band in the vein of Taking Back Sunday and Anberlin.
How did you four guys get together?
Alex replied to an advertisement I had in a street press magazine about starting a new band, we got together and wrote songs for a couple of months before Rick joined and then Josh not long after.
What’s the meaning behind the name, ‘Burning Brooklyn’?
The name is taken from a Taking Back Sunday song.
So I hear you’ve been recording, can you tell us a bit about that, and your upcoming music you’ve been working on?
Yes we've been recording at Hope Studios in Brisbane for about the past month. Completing 4 new songs to add to the 2 we have already released (Dorothy Mantooth and Taking It All). The recording process is coming to an end now and we're about to send it off to America to be mixed by Zack Odom and Kenneth Mount who have recorded the likes of Mayday Parade and Cartel.
Could we be expecting a new single and music video soon?
We definitely have a new single and music video in the works; we are just waiting to hear back from some record labels in regards to releasing our EP before we bring anything out.
Who are some of the band’s musical influences, and musical acts you personally enjoy listening to?
Obviously when we started the band our main influence was Taking Back Sunday, our earlier releases had a lot of the dual vocal ideas that they also used on their earlier albums. We all have a very broad range of music we listen to which I think reflects from song to song with our band. Amongst us we listen to everything from John Mayer to Dillinger Escape Plan.
You were lucky enough to open for Escape The Fate and Pierce The Veil in Brisbane last year, Has that been your biggest show to date? What was that like?
It definitely has been our biggest show so far and it was very surreal. I think it was mainly the fact we were received so well and the crowd really gave us the time and participation to make it such a memorable night. We wish we could play shows like that every night!
What’s that one band you’d love to share the stage with?
Taking Back Sunday [laughs]
Could we be expecting a national tour, maybe even stopping by in my home state, South Australia anytime soon?
We will definitely be touring in support of the new EP. It's hard to say when just now as we are still in the early stages of organizing the release with record labels etc.
Where do you hope to see this band in 3 years?
I think we would all love to play music for a career. In 3 years i just hope we're still really enjoying creating music together.
Remember to chuck the guys a ‘like’ on Facebook over at:
Dorothy Mantooth is a Saint
