We Saved The Party are Sydney’s newest Pop Punk band, but some are far from new to the Sydney music scene. You may recognise bassist, Aaron Delgado originally from The Never Ever, and guitarist, Josh Smith originally from Heroes For Hire. What? You gasp. Yes, they’ve parted ways with their old bands, come together and created a whole new band. Just having begun playing a few shows and in the midst of releasing their awaited EP, I had a chat to Aaron and Josh, about everything We Saved The Party related.
For someone who has never heard of you, how would you describe ‘We Saved The Party’?
Aaron: Our name pretty much says it all. Our music is fun, energetic and makes your inner John Travolta wanna come out and dance.
Josh: We like to describe our genre as Party Punk. So that’s Pop Punk with Dance elements. Think of These Kids Wear Crowns mixed with We Are The In Crowd.
What’s the story behind the band name? What does it mean?
A: We wanted something that describes us as a band and our music. Something fun and party related, so when people come see us at shows or hear our tracks they know they’re going to have a killer time!
You seemed to get this band together quite quickly and get straight onto track. How did you manage this? And how did you maintain the financial safety to do so?
J: Both Aaron and I came from other bands, Myself from Heroes For Hire and Aaron from The Never Ever so this automatically drew the attention of fans which created hype. Once we got Jonno on board within a week we had over 4000 fans on Facebook. This is when Hit City Studios noticed us and asked us to come in for a meeting. We liked what they had to offer us and vice versa. Then after a few road blocks we finally found Hayley and we knew she was perfect straight away. Hit City have helped us immensely throughout the process and being in such a professional environment makes us motivated and determined. We have jobs outside the band which is a safety net for us financially.
Aaron, Now you were previously in the band, The Never Ever, and you’re departure came as quite a surprise. Why exactly did you leave that band?
A: There has been a lot of rumours going around as to why I left, but it was actually a mutual thing between us. We’re all still really good friends; Lani, Brad, Dylan and my ‘home dawg 4life’ Jesse.
Would We Saved The Party ever tour with The Never Ever?
A: Yes, I don’t see why not. As I said we’re all still really good mates and it would be awesome to be back on stage with them. :)
J: We would love to have the possibility to tour with any band in Australia.
You’ve already played a few shows around Australia, what was that like for you? And how did the crowd react to you?
A: So far we have played our first three shows which were a lot of fun. We had a lot of positive feedback from the crowd which has been an amazing response; compared to a time when I played to a room full of 40 year old drunk guys calling me an ‘EMO’. [Laughs]
J: It was exhilarating to be on stage as We Saved The Party. We have so much fun together on stage. There has been an amazing reaction from the crowds. Everyone was dancing and having a good time even if they hadn’t heard the songs before and that’s exactly what we are hoping to achieve.
In the recording department, what’s happening there? What could we be expecting and when?
J: We have been writing and recording at Hit City Studios in Sydney since early October. We are set to release our debut EP titled Flying First Class on May 11.
What were some of your inspirations while writing?
J: Our inspirations were to write songs that anyone from any genre would enjoy. We wanted to write positive songs that put people in a good mood as soon as they listen to them. We wanted songs that make it impossible to sit still.
A: Our inspirations which writing was to do something unique that hasn’t been done before, but also make it extremely fun to listen too.
What are some of the band’s musical influences? And what bands do you personally enjoy listening too?
J: We draw our influences from These Kids Wear Crowns and We Are The In Crowd. We all love pop punk. Personally I enjoy listening to Mayday Parade, All Time Low, Dashboard Confessional and The Maine would have to be up there for me.
What’s that one band you aspire to tour with?
A: Definitely would have to be All Time Low. The Party Scene was the song that made me want to pick up a guitar.
J: It would be an absolute dream come true to tour with Paramore, New Found Glory and Story Of The Year. That would be a crazy tour!
What are your plans for the rest of the year?
J: Well hopefully everyone loves our EP and we can get on some big tours by the end of the year. We will also be writing and recording our first full length album. But we want to play as many shows as possible to as many people as we can.
A: Tour and play as many shows as possible, and meet all the amazing fans we have. They have been truly amazing with all their support since the start and continue to give. Same to all the new fans who have come on board. We owe a lot of our success to them and their dedication. We look forward to embarking on this journey together with them
Where do you hope to see yourselves in 3 years?
A: Playing Warped Tour, Soundwave Festival and traveling the world playing music all year round.
J: We’d love to of done a few big national tours and then head over to the US and experience the touring life over there. So many amazing bands are based over there, the opportunities would be endless.
A little taste of their first track, She Was Like
Thanks to Josh and Aaron for answering some questions! Wishing We Saved The Party all the best for the future!
