Hailing from the Gold Coast, Australia, these 5 young surfers took on the world with their
catchy pop punk music beginning in 2008. After some competition winning, an EP,
they hit big when their second single ‘She’s so Fine’ hit radio play! I’m sure
you’ve heard it. Having only recently released their follow up EP, The New Kids,
and just finishing their national tour, I was curious to discover where this
band were headed, how it began and well their love for surfing.
For someone who has never heard of you, how would you describe ‘Nine
Sons of Dan’?
Five young, fun dudes
who love rocking out with too much energy. Nine Sons Of Dan songs are
incredibly catchy in a pop sense but also contain the added rocking guitar
riffs, solos and drums that many pop bands lack. All together their music
reflects the sunny, happy lifestyle they enjoy while on their favourite place -
The Gold Coast - which they call home.
How did the five of you become a band and where did the name come from?
The band originated
from two of the guys moving to The Gold Coast for university where they
established close friendships and good times with nine other students at
university. The name was raised as a joke for the uni project, the band was
formed and many, many more good times were had!
Your single, She’s So Fine,
seemed to gain you a lot of exposure and radio play. Where were you when you
first heard your song on the radio? What was it like?
AMAZING. It’s something
everyone in a band dreams about when starting and to have it happen is
certainly a milestone in our career. Now we've reached that we are like
"wow, I wonder what else we can achieve?" and we are doing everything
to keep improving and living our dreams.
So She’s So Fine is about your strong liking towards a girl, and I
think what all the ladies want to know, is what do you look for in a girl?
Jay actually wrote this
song and this is Pidgey talking here but I think it’s pretty safe to say we all
look for one type of girl - real! Living on the Gold Coast we see so many girls
get caught up in the whole club scene and quite often fall for all the shallow
things guys do to "chase" girls. In the end, if I can have a great
conversation with a girl and then go hang out at the beach all day with her -
whether we are surfing or not - then I'm happy!
But I must ask who is this song about? And what’s the story behind it?
It’s about one of those
movie moments where the unpopular guy in high school really likes the
"cool" girl and completely screws up when he gets a chance to talk to
her. I think that actually happened to Jay [Laughs].
You’ve just finished your national ‘New Kids’ tour, how did that go for
you?
It was amazing! We couldn't believe there were people in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and everywhere in between that knew the words to our songs! Everyone is so nice too it's really fun!
How would you sum up your live show in 3 words?
Energetic, Airborne,
Fun.
Any interesting or funny tour stories?
Our bass player Wil has
a tradition of dipping his head into whatever ice bucket we get given drinks
in. When we played with Simple Plan they gave us a huge eski full of drinks but
especially full of icy water...Wil dipped he's whole head into it, I think he
actually likes it? Come to think of it he always jumps into freezing pools for
example when we are in Melbourne in winter...brrrrrr
And you’ve also recently released your second EP, The New Kids, can you
tell us a bit about it and what the EP means to you?
It's the EP that we are
really trying to convey our image of a really happy band just stoked to be able
to do what we are doing. There’s songs on there that make us all so happy and
then there’s songs on there that makes us just want to rock out super hard! We
hope it does the same for everyone.
What’s your favourite song from the EP?
FUN!
If you were stuck on a desert island, what two albums would you have
with you?
Jay would probably take
his nature sounds cd that plays sounds of the jungle and rain when he sleeps at
night [Laughs] and the rest of us could probably all agree on a Foo Fighters or
Paramore album. Or "Party Hard" on repeat by Andrew W.K.
I also hear that you are avid surfers; any tips for us hopeless
surfers?
Get out there and don’t
be scared of hurting yourself. If you fail, at least you get a sweet tan and
can go eat subway after...
So what are the plans for the rest of the year?
Tour! we just want to
play to everyone, everywhere, all the time. I think we might record more
material towards the end of the year/start of next year too.
Where would you like to be in 3 years?
On the Gold Coast
surfing....but then our manager would call us and be like "Yo you sold out
your Australian tour and you’re on the Vans Warped tour this year!...
again"
What’s something myself and the readers might not know about you?
We can cook awesome
band dinners!
What’s one question you always wanted to be asked in an interview?
Do you mind if Dave
Grohl from the Foo Fighters reads this?
Any finishing words?
We can’t wait for
summer!!
