After releasing their highly successful sophomore album, Set The World On Fire, Black Veil Brides have backed it up with their new digital EP, Rebels.
The four track EP begins with original song, Coffin, a song leftover from their previous album. That’s all it seems to be, a B Side, it certainly is good but lacks that certain specialty to make a great song.
Moving into Black Veil Bride’s cover of 1983’s Rebel Yell originally by Billy Idol. This song steals the show! Everything seems to fit and gel, from Andy’s vocals to the guitar solo. It gives the album a bit of an edgy and fun feel. They took a great song and made it better.
A cover of Kiss’ Unholy comes next, featuring Black Label Society’s Zakk Wylde. Proving they can live up to their idols. They suit the song well, and Zakk Wylde pulls off the guitar solo exceptionally well. I find it always good to see bands do a few covers here and there; it demonstrates the capability of taking a song and improving.
Concluding the album is the 6 minute director’s cut of the Rebel Love Song music video, a song that had featured on the previous album. After watching the short version of the music video on YouTube and then the extended version from the EP, the extended version explains everything with the dialogue at the beginning.
The EP revisits some of the older Black Veil Brides we saw in We Stitch These Wounds while mixing in the newer sound of Set The World On Fire, an exciting collaboration. Andy Biersack still has his unclean vocal sounds which can be heard on this EP. They seemed to have been locked away for the previous album, rarely hearing any. The EP seemed like fun and nothing to serious, which is always good to hear from a band.
Some people will keep believing that without the hair, make up and overall look, Black Veil Brides wouldn’t be as successful as they are, and that may be true. But there’s no denying they have talent and have filled a hole in the modern music industry.
